Yes, thanks for the trip down memory lane.
Yes I had a pair of skates that fit over your tennis and went on and off with a key. I also owned a skateboard that was 2 inches thick and weighed several pounds.
of course — wore the key on a shoelace around my neck!!!
My skate key was on a chain around my neck at almost all times. I could never skate worth a darn, but that didnt stop me. I had the scrapes and bruises to prove it. A rich neighbor gave me my first 2 wheeler when I was 13, but I dont remember if it had a tank. I’m lucky if I can remember my password to go online.
My mom used to tell me about those. She said she had a pair when she was younger.. then she tells me how easy I have it now.. lol can’t wait to tell those kinds of stories to my son!
If anyone wants to see what they look like.. here’s a picture…
When I was a kid we all skated on the streets and sidewalks and had skate keys. My brothers bike had the tank but not my girls blue Schwinn version of his red bike.
I sure do remember. Nice memories.
Yep
I had a knee action 26″ Schwinn with fake tank. The in thing with your bike. Was to take off the front fender and install a 20″ frot wheel. We called it hollywood!
Yea Buddy ! That skate key was very important. I had to use it each and every tine I took my skates off and put them on again. Also, sometimes in between too. Most people just think I’m nuts when I say I had a skate key. Of course they don’t have the skates that fit onto your shoes either and the steel ( or whatever ) wheels .
Funny you should ask.
I have a brand new skate key hanging on a peg in my shop. I bought a pair of skates at a yard sale a week ago and am working on cleaning them up.
As for the bicycle, I restored one for a lady about 5 years ago. Complete striping, primer, paint, body work and found a replacement for the horn. I even did the pin stripping with real paint.
I love old stuff.
I still have a skate key hanging in my workshop. No skates, though. I had a cheaper bike, and was jealous of a friend who had the tank with a horn. Ah, those were the good old days. I really did prefer the shoe skates that we rented at the skating rink. Aren’t today’s bikes a big improvement over those old coaster brake models?
Yes, a skate key.I don’t remember a bike with a tank on it ,don’t think I ever saw one.
Believe it or not, I do have a skate key that I use at my job on certain types of tools (taps). The key fits like it was made for it. Co-workers will ask where I got it from. I’ve had it for so long, I can’t remeber where I picked up. I know it wasn’t from my old skates, thats for sure.
Skate key on a string or if you were lucky a shoe string, and yes the bike with the tank and a horn………….but the horn had to have batteries two days after Christmas, so it never worked again.
Yes, I do. And you tightened those skates so tight, with the key, that your shoe soles began to buckle up.
How about pushing your wagon with one foot, while the knee and foot of the other leg were inside the wagon box. Handle was pulled back so you could steer with one hand, and you brrrrd and roared down the sidewalk at a hundred miles per hour, and the ankle of your pushing foot always caught the bent nail that was holding the back wheel on. I think I still have ankle scars from that.
